The call for abstracts for the 24th International Congress for Conservation Biology is now open. The Congress is taking place July 3-7, 2010 in beautiful Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Petition to uphold the national Roadless Area Conservation Rule
From the incoming president of the SCB NA Section, Dominick A. DellaSala: PLEASE JOIN SCIENTISTS NATIONWIDE BY SIGNING a letter urging President Obama to uphold the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule until new and lasting protections are in place. The true cost of energy
The National Academy of Sciences released a report estimating the "hidden" externalized costs of energy production and use -- such as the damage air pollution imposes on human health -- that are not reflected in market prices of coal, oil, other energy sources, or the electricity and gasoline produced from them.

Recording roadkills
Announcing the launch of the California Roadkill Observation System,
the first statewide roadkill reporting system where anyone can go online and map their observations. Observers and collaborators needed! So far
we have over 2,000 observations and 170 observers (since August).

ECL 290: Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability in our Research Labs
How much energy does it take to run an ultra-cold freezer, a laser or a gas chromatograph? Can you
save plastics, borrow a spectrophotometer, eliminate mercury from your methods, or switch away from distilled water? Consider joining us this fall to explore how we can make research labs more efficient and greener. Enrolled students will learn about current technologies and lab practices to conserve resources.
