The Davis Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB Davis) has a number of opportunities for members to get involved in conservation-related education. We highly encourage undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in any of these activities to join and participate! Have ideas for other education activities? Contact the officers.
WIDSI (Watch It, Don't Squash It):
Bringing conservation biology into local elementary school classrooms. The WIDSI volunteers plan lessons and activities for elementary school kids, focused on animal behavior, ecology, environmental science, and physiology, often with a "hands-on" approach. [More information]
2009-10 chair: Patrick Grof-Tisza (pgroftisza[at]ucdavis.edu).
Conservation Seminar Series:
Undergraduate education in conservation biology. Over the last several years, the chapter has coordinated a weekly seminar series in the winter quarter for undergraduate students through the EVE department. Chapter members give seminars on conservation topics or their own research, and undergraduate students provide feedback on the presentations. This is a great opportunity for undergraduates to learn about current topics in conservation research, as well as an opportunity for graduate students to practice talking about their research. 2009-10 chair: John Chau (jhchau[at]ucdavis.edu).
BACBS (Bay Area Conservation Biology Symposium):
The latest in local conservation biology research. This regional conference draws researchers and practitioners from around the Bay Area for a day of sharing the latest in conservation biology research. The symposium location rotates as it is hosted by each of the four Bay Area chapters. The 10th annual BACBS was hosted by the Davis chapter 2008. [More information]
2009 BACBS: Saturday, January 31 at Stanford University - www.bacbs.com
Outreach at public events:
Promoting the science of conservation biology. The Davis chapter SCB has held information booths at events like UC Davis Picnic Day and local conferences, including the 2006 Society for Conservation Biology conference held in San Jose, CA. Information booths have also been used as fundraisers for the chapter by selling crafts or tickets to special events. Volunteers are always needed to run the booth and answer questions. It's a fun way to meet people and represent your chapter! [More information]
